The One-Dimensional Saussure

Abstract

In this study, attempt is made to present de Saussure’s research program in its “new” form, by comparing “lectures” and “writings” to obtain a single intellectual, conceptual, and methodological structure, thus bridging the gap between linguistics of langue and linguistics of parole to build the unity of linguistics. This allowed us to present the contribution of Guberina, in which langue and parole were combined in one entity. This is another testimony that dichotomy does not lead to exclusion. When it was introduced, it was only meant to grant priority to the systematic study, and thus the two elements of the dichotomy do not contradict one another. In this context comes Guberina’s contribution, which is considered as the logical development or logical application of what was stated in “writings”.
